Benito Mussolini was born on July 29th, 1883 and died on April 28th, 1945 when he was captured and shot by Italian partisans. Mussolini is the founder of Fascism and leader of Italy from 1922 to 1943. He allied Italy with Nazi Germany and Japan in ww2. He form the Fascist party in March 1919 with the support of many unemployed war veterans. With the veterans he turn them into a armed squad known as the Black Shirts who terrorized political opponents. By 1921 the Fascist party was invited to join the coalition government.
During October 1922, there was a political choas and the Black Shirts marched Rome and Mussolini made himself appear as to be the only man capable of restoring order. King Victor invited Mussolini to form a government. This allow him to gradually dismntled the institutions of democratic government and in 1925, he made himself dictator. Like Hitler he wanted to re-establish his country as a great European power.
When he made a declaration of war on Britain and France in 1940, it exposed Italian military weakness causign a series of defeat. By July 1943, Mussolini was overthrown and imprisoned by former colleagues in the Fascist government. During September, Italy signed an armistice with the Allies while Mussolini was rescued by German commandos. He then fled towards Switzerland when the Allies started advancing northwards through Italy, he was then capture by Italian Partisans.

It is said that Mussolini took all the gold he could from wedding rings, watches, etc. to make these coins. These coins were known as fantasy coins, coins that he made hoping to be used has future coinage that could be world wide. Mussolini had the coins privately made and was planning on sharing them out when he saw that the economy began to drop. As seen the design is of Mussolini in his uniform and helmet. The original design that refers to “lions” and “sheep” actually belonged to
