Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected in 1933 and was the only U.S president to be elected four times. He helped lead the U.S through the Great Depression and through World War II. FDR expanded the powers of the federal government. All of this was done through many back to back programs and reforms known as the New Deal. All of this began forming within his first hundred days as president. By 1936 the economics began improving from his benefit as the President.
During his time as President the unemployment rate dropped 20% as many of the young men and women enlisted into the military. "FDR was part of the war strategies by the Big Three (Roosevelt, Churchill, and
Stalin) to defeat their enemies." -WWII incite. As the U.S sought out to find allies, FDR gave out support to China, Britain to help counter Japan and Nazi Germans. He was the one who signed off on the counter attack on Japan and Germany in the Pearl Harbor attacks in 1941.

The USS Indianapolis was a battleship which was known as the worst naval disaster in US history. This ship was sunk by Japanese submarines, killing 300 of the 1,196 and stranding the rest in shark infested water with little food or drinkable water. When the survivors were found four days later, only 316 men were alive. The captain of the ship, Charles Butler McVay III survived and was accused of putting the ship in danger. The ship was attacked on a top secret mission. This mission was to transport parts of the atomic bomb to Tinian. These bombs, a few days later, were launched at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
